Why We Develop Dark Spots

A thinning ozone layer, pollutionenhanced sensitivity to sun exposure and increased use of hormone medications are common causes of pigmentation (melanin) issues. Hyper pigmentation (oxidized melanin) can be induced by sun, heat, acne, rosacea or a simple skin irritation if inflammation is present. The most common way to develop pigmentation is through sunburn.
Alternately, a dispersed darkening of the skin over the sides of the forehead, jaw line and upper lip is called melasma, which is hormone-dependent and commonly seen during pregnancy.
