In addition to antioxidants, an ophthalmic solution containing vitamin A (0.012 percent) may be useful in the resolution of chronic blepharitis (characterized by inflammation of the eyelid margins) and xerophthalmia (lack of tear production). Up to six drops daily in each eye acutely, followed by dosing two to three times daily until symptom resolution, is an effective treatment for this type of condition.
N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) also has demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of blepharitis. One hundred milligrams (mg) of NAC, three times a day, can improve tear quality in blepharitis.
Allergic or viral conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjuctiva of the eye) is effectively treated with high doses of vitamin C with bioflavonoids (one gram vitamin C up to three times a day initially, followed by a maintenance dose of 500–1,000 mg per day).
Dry eyes, or Sicca syndrome, is another condition I frequently encounter in my practice. It is commonly associated with certain autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome. Symptoms include irritation, burning, itching and a sensation that something is in the eye. Nutritional considerations aimed at increasing tear production include: vitamin A (orally and topically), evening primrose oil (three grams per day), vitamin C (two to three grams per day) and vitamin E (200– 400 IU per day).
In addition, the homeopathic combination preparation, Oculoheel (by Heel) has been scientifically proven for its efficacy in treating conjunctivitis and other ocular problems. I often prescribe Oculoheel (initially, one tablet sublingually three times per day) to help alleviate several ocular symptoms in conjunction with antioxidants.
