With diabetes on the rise, hyperbaric oxygen offers help in healing diabetic wounds and preventing other complications such as amputations.
"One of the most basic and important requirements for any healing process is an adequate supply of oxygen," explains Dr. Sanja Savic Kallesoe of the BaroMedical Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic in New Westminster, BC. "It is therefore not surprising that an inadequate supply of oxygen is a common cause of organ malfunction and delayed healing."
Many diabetic complications are a result of poor circulation and low oxygen delivery. Early signs of circulatory problems include pain in the legs, feet or
hands; "pins and needles," tingling and-if left unaddressed-numbness.
Diabetes is the leading cause of lower-limb amputations, yet Dr. Kallesoe says that the majority could have been prevented with early detection and timely treatment.
"Repeated exposure to high concentrations of oxygen is very effective in treating non-healing wounds, infections, ulcers, pressure sores, gangrene and neuropathy by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels and nerves."
