Shower Curtain Caution

Toxic chemicals may lurk in the most unlikely culprit-your new shower curtain.

Vinyl curtains can contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that "off-gases" when you crack open the package, resulting in that chemical or plastic smell. PVC exposure can cause headaches, loss of coordination, nausea as well as damage to the central nervous system and kidneys.

A new report by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice on "Volatile Vinyl" advises consumers to avoid curtains and other products containing PVC, such as some raincoats, plastic food wrap and foodpackaging and children's toys. They are sometimes but not always labeled as "vinyl" or "PVC" or have a #3 recycling symbol.

"Choose a shower curtain made from polyester, nylon, cotton or hemp that is easily laundered," says Julie Hardy of JMH Home Environmental Solutions (www.jmhhomesolutions.ca). "Be aware that with cotton curtains, if you don't have a liner, mold will have a tendency to grow."

PVC-free plastic curtains are also available. Check with your retailer. IKEA, for example, phased out PVC shower curtains over 10 years ago.
