Is Your Weight Balanced?

Have you ever stepped off the bathroom scales and asked yourself in confusion, "What exactly did I just lose or just gain?"

Unfortunately, scales cannot measure the three main internal weights that may shift over time. These weights are fat muscle and bone, also known as your body composition.

Here's a typical scenario: Over a ten year period you can lose 15 pounds of muscle weight, and gain 15 lbs of fat, especially if you have become inactive. Looking at the scales the needle hasn't changed, yet when you look in the mirror, you know something has shifted. Thoughts of gaining muscle and losing fat begin to enter your mind!

The scales also cannot measure bone loss, which is also a major concern for some people. With this in mind, it is a wise decision to have your body composition measured on a regular basis. Fortunately, this can be done with new DEXA x-ray technology that is safe and accurate. Now available in Vancouver, this technology has become the gold standard in Canada for body composition assessment. The x-ray scan measures fat as a percentage of body weight, monitors lean tissue (muscle) and provides bone density, all in one easy 20-minute procedure. This procedure, coupled with new recommended levels for each of the three weights, has created a new definition of healthy weight.

A healthy weight is achieved when bone muscle and fat (body composition) are all in their recommended ranges. This means that regardless of what the scales, height/weight or Body Mass Index charts may say, the new model for weight management is now based on preliminary DEXA measurements. Following all DEXA scans, participants have valuable information to design a strategy for change and shift one or more weights into healthier ranges.

Since 2005, I have been incorporating DEXA into a new weight management program that assists clients in reaching a healthy weight using new natural techniques and strategies. I have been fortunate in developing a team of health professionals dedicated to assisting clients reach and maintain their new weight condition. I have termed this condition a "Balanced Weight," which is also the name of my program.

Some recent results include;
- 37 lb fat loss,
- 17 lb muscle gain,
- 22 percent increase in bone density.

All of these results were achieved over a period of 9 to 14 months using new natural techniques of exercise, diet modifications and supplements.

Results of your scan may indicate the need for a fat-loss concept, a bone-building procedure, or a muscle-gaining strategy that we can customize to meet your needs. We work closely with you over the duration of the program and act as your personal coach in helping you benefit from reaching your weight management goals.
