Cancer: A New Beginning

In November 1982, I had not been feeling well for some time when I decided to go for a medical checkup. The diagnosis: cancer. I had multiple growths in both breasts and my Pap smear was positive. Cancer had spread through my lymph system. I had a fairly large growth under my right arm and in my right leg, as well as several growths in the groin area and my neck. The recommendation was radical mastectomy of both breasts and a complete hysterectomy.

I made the decision not to have the operations and was given a possible six months to live. I knew about holistic healing methods. A family member had gone the natural route and it had
worked for her. I was determined it would work for me, too. And so began my journey into a new way of life.

Today I am a 25-year cancer survivor. In my opinion, getting rid of fear is the key to survival. Next is dealing with the past, which cannot be changed. Acceptance and forgiveness are necessary. Healing has many possible routes, so one must learn all that is available. Deciding to go the natural way causes major, major changes in lifestyle.

On receiving the diagnosis, I made many modifications, most significantly the immediate change to a vegetarian diet of mainly organic raw fruits and vegetables, sprouted grains, nuts and seeds and two freshly pressed garlic cloves each day. I immediately started growing wheatgrass for juice, as well as making fresh carrot and other juices daily. I began using a variety of supplements; tried fasting; switched to distilled water for drinking, making teas and cooking; took a course in foot reflexology; and more. My study of natural healing was intensive.

From September 1982 to July 1983, I dropped from 155 pounds to less than 100. A second doctor gave me the diagnosis of carcinomatosis- widespread cancer through the body. At that point, I quit working and moved from a high-rise apartment back to my parents' rustic farm home with outdoor plumbing. It was probably the best thing I could have done for myself. So much good was there, the clean country air, fresh organically grown food, the crackling of the wood fire. My surroundings were that of beauty, peace and tranquility. The perfect place for healing.

In January 1984, on seeing a third doctor, chest X-rays and ultrasound revealed that some nodules and scar tissue still remained in each breast. By July 1984, my weight was up to 105 pounds, the growths had disappeared and my Pap test was normal.

After receiving a "good health" report, I returned to the city and full-time employment. I was totally happy and healthy! This truly extraordinary experience given to me in the form  of cancer has changed my life forever. It allowed a new awakening of mind-body-spirit healing, a realization of the perfection of the human body and its tremendous ability to heal itself.
