Air Quality Health Index in Canada

Source: HANS e-News - October 15, 2007

Although fall has arrived, the poor air quality we usually see during those smoggy days of summer should still be of concern to Canadians. Outdoor air pollution is a factor in one in 12 deaths in major Canadian cities. Even at low levels, air pollution can contribute to a variety of harmful health effects, ranging from premature death to asthma to coughing to eye irritation. While even the healthiest among us should be aware of increases in air pollutants, children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems need to take extra precautions as they are particularly at risk.

To help increase public awareness of poor air quality and related health issues, Environment Canada and Health Canada, in partnership with the provinces, public health authorities and environmental and health non-governmental organizations, have developed the world's first national Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for use in Canadian cities from coast to coast over the next four years.
