1) Professional Space for Rent in Vancouver

Two offices/treatment rooms for rent, suitable for people working in the healing professions who want a professional setting to work out of. The Pacific Institute of Reflexology is very well established and well known in the community.

This location is second to none. With the West Broadway/Cambie Street intersection just one block away, it is exceedingly easy to access from all areas of the city by private or public transit - and it won’t be long before the RAV line opens with a station one block away!

One office is 10’6" x 10’6” with the entrance in the Institute. The other is a pleasant suite of two 9' x 10' offices/rooms with a private entrance. Monthly rent is $400 + GST. I am open to someone renting and then subletting to colleagues. I also have very reasonable part time and casual rates for any one interested.

2) ISSUE UPDATES

Terminator Seed Ban Act Needs Your Support

On May 31, 2007, Private Members Bill C-448 to ban Terminator Seeds in Canada was tabled by Member of Parliament Alex Atamanenko, New Democratic Party Agriculture Critic and MP for BC Southern Interior.

Terminator seeds are genetically engineered to be sterile after the first harvest to stop farmers from saving and re-planting seeds.

The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) is working hard to make sure that Terminator seeds are never field-tested or commercialized in Canada. We need you to take action with us.

Step one: Send an instant email to the Prime Minister and ask him to
make this bill law. Go to http://www.cban.ca

Step two: Ask your friends to do their part by sending them this e-mail.

CBAN is working with organizations, community groups and individuals across the country and we need the support of people like you. Together we can make a real and positive difference. To find out more go to www.banterminator.org/canada

Thousands of Canadians Poisoned by Pesticides Each Year

More than 6,000 Canadians are directly poisoned by pesticides each year and nearly half of those are children under the age of six, according to a new report by the David Suzuki Foundation.

“Protecting children’s health is one of our most vital responsibilities,” says David Boyd, report author and environmental lawyer. “The startling number of Canadian children poisoned by pesticides provides compelling evidence that stronger actions are required to prevent these incidents from happening.”

The report Northern Exposure: Acute Pesticide Poisonings in Canada tallied data on pesticide poisonings gathered from provincial and regional authorities covering nine of the 10 provinces.

In addition to the shocking number of acute pesticide-related poisonings, the report concludes that Canada operates an ineffective system for tracking and monitoring acute poisonings, and most importantly, fails to sufficiently protect its citizens from the adverse health effects of pesticides. The David Suzuki Foundation endorses the creation of an environmental health initiative in Canada that includes the tracking of pesticide poisonings, as well as a national poisoning prevention program.

Trends in the Canadian Lumber Industry, 1995 to 2006

Canada’s lumber industry has undergone extensive restructuring, and has remained profitable despite the impact of various trade and economic pressures during recent years, a new study has found.

The study, published in the Analysis in Brief series, reveals that the industry has lost thousands of jobs since the turn of the millennium. However, it has intensified its restructuring, resulting in substantial gains in labour productivity.

These gains, combined with a brief but large surge in lumber prices and operating revenues in 2004, have helped the industry maintain positive profit margins comparable, on average, to those reported in the manufacturing sector from 1999 to 2005.
