1) Editorial

I’m sitting at my desk in the HANS office, looking at papers stacked here, there, everywhere. The result of almost 30 years of archiving and wow, what a trip down memory lane!

Here’s an old newspaper clipping from around 1980. The photo includes me, my mother, Chris Shirley of Pacific Institute of Reflexology, Del and Inez Birtch (former patients of Dr Pieter Taams), and of course, one of HANS’ founders, Olive Balabanov.

I will never forget that day. We were picketing outside the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons. Just a handful of us and placards. It was the first time I’d ever done anything so… so… out there, before. My mother was adorable. She had no idea what was going on, but when I asked her to come, she immediately said, “I’m in!” The really funny thing was, as we paraded out on the street, there were people peeking out the windows of the College. They were looking at us, we were looking at them. Wondering about each other.

All we wanted was freedom of choice in health care. A simple thing. And, we wanted the College to stop harassing people who offered that freedom of choice such as Dr Pieter Taams, who, unfortunately, despite our meager protest, lost his license to practice medicine because of his use of natural remedies.

Ah, here’s another slice of history, my Rafe Mair file. In it is correspondence between us when he was BC Minister of Health. In 1984, at the beginning of his career as a talk show host, he wrote an editorial for his CJOR radio program. I kept a copy of it and take the liberty of quoting some of it:

“We have forgotten the basic principle called freedom of choice. Many who agree with that statement unfortunately blame the medical profession, and that is grossly unfair since their power comes from us.

“The art of healing, no matter who practices it and no matter what form it takes, has never been a precise science. Certainly, there is a great deal of precision involved but by and large it is still very much an art. The ability of the body to heal itself is remarkable and not by any means fully understood and as far as the mental aspect of healing is concerned, we are light years away from any real understanding of the process. That faith can, if not move mountains, than arrest disease and postpone death is too well documented to be argued…

“Those professionals who develop life-prolonging skills, which after all is what healing is really all about, become pretty dogmatic about how it is done. Invariably, they claim a monopoly upon success and often that translates into a state monopoly as well, to the extent that a monopoly develops, the freedom of individual choice is diminished.”

This man was one advanced thinker, even way back then. Now, 23 years later, Rafe will be talking at a HANS-sponsored event on March 29th, along with Dr Don Nixdorf, Executive Director of the BC Chiropractic Association.

You don’t want to miss this health-care conversation. This will be a history-setting event. I’ll be there, and I hope you will be, too. You can preregister at www.hans.org and hold a spot.

Please share this message with any one of the two million people who are interested in prevention and non-drug therapy in BC. They are welcome to attend as well.

Warm regards,

Lorna J Hancock
Executive Director & Founding Member

2) Support Strauss Herb Company and Health Care Freedoms

This is a request from the Strauss Herb Company of Kamloops to Health Action Network Society members and friends to attend a court hearing in Vancouver. The hearing was originally booked for March 29 but is being rescheduled because of time conflicts. The purpose of your presence would be to impress upon the judge hearing the arguments that the issue being decided is of significant importance to the citizens of Canada.

What is the issue? In November 2005, Health Canada announced a new policy that essentially says that plants from which a Schedule F substance (prescription drug) can be extracted shall be deemed as equivalent and will only be available by prescription as well.

You may have noticed that products containing red yeast rice, yohimbe bark, and cowhage are no longer available. The herb Gotu cola was also scheduled to be restricted but received a reprieve because of extensive lobbying from industry. That said, the policy which makes this possible is still in force.

Because of federal court rules, a formal notice to challenge the policy had to be filed within 30 days. Strauss Herb Company did so in December 2005.

We submitted affidavits on the issue that the drug yohimbine and the herb yohimbe are not equivalent and should not be treated as equivalent. Our affidavits were prepared by Steven Dentali, PhD, vice president of Scientific Affairs of the American Herbal Products Association, Allison McCuthcheon, PHD, research scientist, and Robert Jackman, PhD, research and development consultant. These three scientists are arguably amongst the most knowledgeable in the world in the study of herbs.

The purpose of the up-coming hearing in Vancouver is for the judge to consider the admissibility of new evidence from the US Food and Drug Administration that Health Canada’s claim that yohimbe is a restricted product in the US is, in fact, incorrect. Health Canada is arguing that the court should not be able to hear this truth--that Health Canada’s sworn expert testimony is misleading and false.

We have a unique and rare opportunity here to win a significant victory over the regulatory creep that is violating our rights as consumers, retailers, manufacturers and practitioners.

If you are able and/or interested in attending the court to show support for this critical initiative, please contact me at phelgason@straussherbco.com with a subject line “help in court” and I will make a group e-mail list to inform everyone of when and where.

Chemical Linked to Birth Defects Found at Unsafe Levels in Canned Food

Environmental Working Group, March 5

In the most comprehensive US tests for an industrial chemical used to line cans of foods, an independent laboratory found a compound linked to birth defects in more than half of the samples of canned fruit, vegetables, soda, and baby formula from supermarket shelves, according to a new Environmental Working Group (EWG) report.

The lab tests conducted for EWG found bisphenol A, or BPA, in 55 of 97 cans of food purchased from major supermarket chains in California, Connecticut and Georgia. The lab tested 27 national name brands and three store brands.

Bird Flu: A Bonanza for “Big Chicken”
A report by GRAIN, March 2007

One year ago, when governments were fixated on getting surveillance teams into wetlands and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was waving the finger of blame at Asia and Africa’s abundant household poultry, GRAIN and other groups pointed out that large-scale industrial poultry farms and the global poultry trade were spreading bird flu -- not wild birds nor backyard flocks. Today, this has become common knowledge, even though little is being done to control the industrial source of the problem, and governments still shamelessly roll out the wild bird theory to dodge responsibility.

GRAIN is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) which promotes the sustainable management and use of agricultural biodiversity based on people’s control over genetic resources and local knowledge.

Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators Gauge National Progress

Environmental indicators can serve as measuring sticks to track progress by governments, industries and individuals in protecting and improving the environment. They can also be used to highlight emerging environmental concerns and to communicate complex scientific information to decision makers and the public.

That is why Environment Canada, Statistics Canada and Health Canada have been working together to further develop and communicate national environmental indicators of three key aspects of the environment: air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and freshwater quality.

These indicators were first reported in Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) 2005 and have been updated and further developed in the recently released 2006 report.

This GNM presentation takes a critical look at the standard theory of metastasis. Based on Dr Hamer’s finding about the nature of tumors, you will learn that the hypothesis that cancer cells travel to other parts of the body to cause a new tumor at a new site can no longer be maintained. GNM does not dispute secondary cancers, but on the basis that each type of cancer is the natural biological response to a specific kind of unexpected emotional distress, secondary cancers are the result of additional conflicts, often initiated by a diagnosis or prognosis shock. GNM is the ultimate preventive medicine!
