1) Editorial

Dear HANS Members and Friends;

As I write this, it’s Valentine’s Day and I’m also in the basement suite of our house where our computer is. All of this has special meaning to me.

Twenty-five years ago minus one night, I was very pregnant with our third daughter and almost one month overdue. During the weeks prior to that, a group of us health advocates had been trying to come up with the name for a consumer-based organization that had staying power and would be a strength in the community. But until then, none of the names we had come up with seemed right.

Even though I was seriously overdue, we decided to meet at my house and see if we could at last come up with a name we would all value.

Well, my third daughter had other plans for me that night.

The meeting began at 7:00 pm in this very basement suite, but it was obvious fairly quickly that I could no longer ignore the contractions that had started a few hours earlier.

Off I went to Grade Hospital in Vancouver to deliver our youngest, Lorill, and in my absence, Croft Woodruff, Alan Martin, and Judi Lees came up with “Health Action Network Society”, the name HANS still bears today.

This morning, when we threw a surprise birthday breakfast for Lorill, it took no imagination at all to remember that momentous night 25 years ago, which represents, in fact, the birth of both Lorill and HANS.

In addition to this piece of trivia is one other interesting thing I would like to share. Back in the 80s, Rafe Mair was the BC Minister of Health. I have always felt he was THE best Minister of Health that this province has ever had. So it’s an honour to have him speaking at our HANS meeting on March 29th along Dr Don Nixdorf (also a long-time friend and colleague) about changes that we could make to health care. IMPORTANT changes to health care.

Please join us on March 29th at the Firefighter’s Social Club in Burnaby. All the details are at www.hans.org and you can register online. Hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Lorna J Hancock
Executive Director & Founding Member

3) ISSUE UPDATES

Fragrances Hide Toxic Chemical Ingredients

Nobody wants to give their sweetheart a gift laced with toxic chemical fragrances. But many of us may unwittingly do so. That’s because a major loophole in US federal law allows manufacturers to hide potentially hazardous chemicals in product scents, including substances linked to allergies, birth defects, and cancer in animal studies.

Cosmetics companies won’t tell you what’s in the scents they sell you. So the Environmental Working Group research team has combed through thousands of gift ideas to pick some that smell great and have no hidden fragrance ingredients.
