1) Editorial

Dear Members and Friends;

Tonight is an important night – it’s the night Dr George Carlo will share his dramatic story with HANS and friends. Carlo is what some call a ‘whistleblower’ - an individual that has stood in the middle of the marketing propaganda of a harmful technology and said ‘No.’

It’s about cellphones. You have one. I have one. And everyone you know seems to have one, including young children, the latest targets in marketing schemes of ambitious companies.

Please come and listen with us. The more people that Dr George Carlo shares his story with, the sooner regulators are going to bring changes forward with suitable protections for people using this technology. You and I can make a difference. I’ll be there. Are you coming, too?

Point Grey Golf Club, Friday, November 3, 7:00 pm. As a HANS member, you are invited to attend his lecture at a reduced amount, and all the details are on www.hans.org.

Hope to see you soon!

Lorna Hancock
Founding Member & Director

2) ISSUE UPDATES

Job Satisfaction, Stress and Depression Statistics

The vast majority of Canadian workers were satisfied with their jobs in 2002, but about one in 12 (around 1.3 million) were not, according to a new study.
Data from the 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey, which focused on mental health and well-being, show that just over 6 percent of workers were “not too satisfied,” and 2 percent were “not at all satisfied.”

The article “Unhappy on the job,” published in the latest edition of Health Reports, revealed that relatively high proportions of men and women who worked in sales or service, or processing, manufacturing or utilities, were unhappy on the job. The same was true for men in administrative, financial or clerical jobs. Job stress, shift work and lower incomes were all factors associated with job dissatisfaction.

Food Consumption Trends, 2005

On the whole, Canadians are turning to more fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet, and away from oils and fats, according to the latest snapshot of food consumption for 2005.

On average, they consumed 39.4 kilograms of fresh fruit in 2005, compared with 37.6 kg a year earlier and 36.0 kg in 1995. On the other hand, consumption of processed fruits (canned, frozen or dry) fell modestly to 8.0 kg per person.

Canadians also consumed more fresh vegetables, but only if you don't count fresh potatoes, which have been falling out of favour.

Aquaculture, 2005

Operating revenues generated by Canada’s aquaculture industry rebounded to an all-time high in 2005, in the wake of increased production and exports.

The industry reported record revenues of $752.6 million, up 11.0 percent from 2004. This increase ended two consecutive years of declines.

Finfish sales, which accounted for just over 88 percent of total operating revenues, increased 12.3 percent to $663.0 million. This growth resulted from a 40.5 percent increase in the value of salmon production, which dominates the industry.

The value of aquaculture exports surged 22.0 percent to $514.6 million. The most significant contributor to this increase was a 25.2 percent jump in the value of fresh salmon exported to the United States, Canada’s most important market.
