Revealing "Who Owns Nature?" Report Released
by ETC GroupThis November, ETC Group released a 48-page report, "Who Owns Nature?" on corporate concentration in commercial food, farming, health and the strategic push to commodify the planet's remaining natural resources.
In a world where market research is becoming increasingly proprietary and pricey, ETC Group's report names names, discloses market share and provides top 10 industry rankings up and down the corporate food chain. Not all the corporations identified in ETC Group's new report are household names, but collectively they control a staggering share of the commercial products found on industrial farms, in our refrigerators and medicine cabinets.

Vitamin E Prevents Lung Cancer - News Media Virtually Silent
Researchers at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center have found that taking more vitamin E substantially reduces lung cancer. Their new study shows that people consuming the highest amounts of vitamin E had the greatest benefit. When they compared persons taking the most vitamin E with those taking the least, there was a 61 percent reduction in lung cancer risk.
Lung cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer on earth; over 1.3 million people are diagnosed with it each year. With medical treatment, survival rates are "consistently poor," says Cancer Research UK. Lung cancer kills nearly 1.2 million per year. It accounts for 12 percent of all cancers, but results in 18 percent of all cancer deaths. Anything that can reduce these dismal facts is important news . . .very important. Yet the mainstream media have virtually ignored vitamin E's important role as a cancer fighter.
A 61 percent reduction in lung cancer with vitamin E? How could the news media have missed this one?

Groups praise Ontario for Remaining Firm - Doctors, Citizens Blast NAFTA over Pesticide Ban
by Council of CanadiansThe Council of Canadians and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) has condemned NAFTA for letting chemical giant Dow sue Canada over a Quebec pesticide ban.
"Citizens in every corner of the country are outraged that a U.S.-based transnational firm would attack Quebec's environmental laws," says Council of Canadians board member and trade expert, Steven Shrybman.
CAPE Executive Director, Gideon Forman, says pesticide bans such as Quebec's reduce the use of lawn chemicals significantly and protect people from serious illness. "Exposure to some of these poisons puts a person at risk for cancer and neurological disease," says Forman. "But Quebec's ban helped cut pesticide use by 50 percent - a far greater reduction than anywhere else in Canada."
