1) Editorial

Dear HANS Members and Friends;

On March 29th, we’re going to host a lecture with Dr Don Nixdorf and Rafe Mair. Why is this meeting so important to me? For one thing, I’ve known both men for at least 25 years and have admired them greatly. They’ve both been champions in their own ways. Dr Don Nixdorf is the Executive Director of the BC Chiropractic Association and has driven chiropractic through some pretty big times. And, Rafe, well...

I wrote to Rafe in 1985 when he was the BC Minister of Health, and I ranted on about how unfair the delivery of health services was in BC at that time. I used the tragic and very real example of how an acupuncturist had been so harassed that he’d taken his own life. Where was the justice, I demanded, when the only thing he was guilty of was practicing medicine? His own kind of medicine, where no-one died and people got well. Rafe wrote back to me and in so many words said, ‘What you are saying makes sense. Develop your constituency.”

Well, here we are, 25 years later, and our vital message at HANS has remained the same and we’re working just as hard to maintain it. Much in general has changed for the better. Use and acceptance of complimentary therapies has grown steadily. Acupuncture is an increasing regulated profession and some practitioners even earn the esteemed title of Doctor of traditional Chinese medicine.

That said, there’s still a long way to go before traditional Chinese medicine and other recognized integrative healing modalities are fully included in health care delivery. Dr Nixdorf and Rafe Mair will be discussing this very issue, and what we the health care consumer can do to address it, on March29th. I am honored that the event they’re speaking at will be HANS-sponsored.

Please make an effort to come because we need to fill that room. Details are at www.hans.org. It’s easy to register online!

Warm regards,
Lorna J Hancock
Executive Director & Founding Member

Trade Agreement Could Terminate BC’s Climate Plan

PRESS RELEASE February 14th

Gordon Campbell would like to think he’s upstaging Arnold Schwarzenegger by proposing strict new environmental regulations. But a little-known trade agreement with Alberta could end up terminating any effort to fight climate change, says the Council of Canadians.

On April 1, 2007, the relatively unknown Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) between BC and Alberta will go into effect. “After that date, both provinces can be sued by corporations or individuals for exactly the kind of regulatory changes BC Premier Gordon Campbell is proposing in his new environmental plan,” says Carleen Pickard, BC spokesperson for the Council of Canadians.

TILMA, which was signed into law without public debate last April, is a legally binding agreement between Alberta and B.C. that gives businesses and individuals the right to sue either province when they feel that any regulation or other government policy “restricts or impairs” investment. BC’s plan for higher tailpipe emissions standards on new vehicles, anti-idling measures for transport trucks, new low-carbon fuel standards and stricter rules on methane-capture at private landfills will all impair investment and are therefore vulnerable to attack under TILMA.

“TILMA also forbids the introduction of new standards or regulations after April 1, 2007,” adds Pickard. “BC’s proposed climate plan is clearly incompatible with this new trade and investment agreement, which is a perfect example of why TILMA should never have been signed in the first place.”

Protect North America’s Boreal Forest

Can you imagine life without some of your favorite birds? If the summer breeding ground for more than 300 of North America’s bird species is not protected, we could lose some of these amazing birds forever. The Boreal Forest, known as North America's Bird Nursery, is one of the largest unspoiled ecosystems left on Earth - and it is under threat!

Several pipeline projects are planned for the Canadian Boreal region - and they are just the first step in opening up this unspoiled area to unsustainable mining, clear-cutting, and runaway development.

Please tell Canadian officials to protect the pristine Boreal Forest before it is irreversibly damaged at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/773182067?...

Going to the Doctor 2005

More than three-quarters of Canadian adults reported that they had consulted a medical doctor at least once in 2004, and one-quarter had seen a specialist. A new study sheds light on the factors that play a role in determining whether Canadians see a physician or specialist.

The study, published today in Health Reports, shows that individual health needs, as measured by chronic conditions and self-perceived general and mental health, still have a strong impact on determining whether Canadians consult a doctor.

This GNM presentation takes a critical look at the standard theory of metastasis. Based on Dr Hamer’s finding about the nature of tumors, you will learn that the hypothesis that cancer cells travel to other parts of the body to cause a new tumor at a new site can no longer be maintained. GNM does not dispute secondary cancers, but on the basis that each type of cancer is the natural biological response to a specific kind of unexpected emotional distress, secondary cancers are the result of additional conflicts, often initiated by a diagnosis or prognosis shock. GNM is the ultimate preventive medicine!
