1) Editorial

Dear HANS Members & Friends;

Two years ago, a HANS' team went to Victoria to speak to about a dozen MLAs on a Special Committee on Health. When it was my turn to talk, the message I shared is that it makes economic sense to play the health care game with the entire team. How can patients win with only our current crisis view of health and wellness? Should not integrated, non-drug practitioners be treated with the same respect and consideration as those who practice drug therapy?

In response, one of the Special Committee members leaned over the table and spoke honestly and openly to me.

"Mrs. Hancock," he said. "What you are saying is very important and certainly noteworthy. It's not WHAT you are saying that is the issue, however. That we understand and appreciate - very much so. We even agree. The problem is that you are not speaking with a big enough voice. You need to have a larger HANS membership to compete for attention with the large groups such as the BC Medical Association and others."

And this is why I come to you, our e-News subscribers, to ask you to please consider this personally. I do. I want to succeed. After 28 years of wanting an integrated health care system, of working over 15,000 volunteer hours a year, I can't tell you how badly I want to see this happen.

If you, too, care about an integrated approach to health care, then you please join HANS. If you can afford $5 a month, or $35 a year, that's all it costs to be a member.

In addition to this low cost of membership, we'll give you, at no charge, a free DVD of one of our recent health lectures ($15 retail). In the past, we used to offer this free gift of information but discontinued it due to the high cost of producing DVDs; however now, with new technology at our disposal, we can offer this membership benefit once again.

It's my Christmas wish that people truly understand what we are doing at HANS. I ask again, are you with me? If you answer yes, sign up as a member today. It's easy.

Phone us at 604-435-0512 and pay by Visa or Mastercard. Or fill out the form on our website at www.hans.org. Or fill in the application found in our magazine called Health Action.

2) Support a Ban on Terminator Seeds in Canada!

Canadian Biotechnology Action Network Nov 21 ACTION ALERT

On Dec 7, 2006 the House of Commons Agriculture and Agri-Food Committee will hold a one-hour hearing on Terminator technology.

WRITE to your MP and the Minister of Agriculture before Dec 7th.

In March 2006 and February 2005, your letters stopped the Canadian government from acting to end the international moratorium on Terminator ("suicide seeds") at the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. In March, the Canadian delegation to the UN meeting did not object to the reaffirmation and strengthening of the moratorium. Yet, our government supported the moratorium without actually stating a position on Terminator. Now we find out that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is preparing the road for approval of Terminator!

DEMAND that the Canadian Government state its unqualified opposition to this dangerous technology and take immediate steps to legislate a ban on field-testing and commercialization in Canada.

Terminator or Genetic Use Restriction Technology (GURTs) is a technology of genetic engineering designed by the multinational seed industry to render seeds sterile after first harvest, thus preventing farmers from saving and re-using seed, forcing them to return to corporations to buy seed every season. This predatory strategy has been widely condemned, in Canada and across the world, because it threatens farmer livelihoods, food security, and agricultural biodiversity. And yet, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency continues to prepare for the potential introduction of Terminator seeds and there is no policy in Canada to address the devastating impacts Terminator would have on farmers' livelihoods.

* In August 2006, Monsanto announced that it will buy US seed company Delta & Pine Land. If the deal goes through, Monsanto will own the most advanced research on Terminator including the only greenhouse trials of Terminator seeds in the world. (Monsanto previously committed not to commercialize Terminator but has begun to reword this pledge.)

* In October 2005, the Canadian Patent Office granted the first ever Canadian patent on a Terminator technology (owned by Delta & Pine Land and the U.S. Department of Agriculture).

* Swiss multinational Syngenta has requested a Canadian patent on Terminator potatoes.

Consultation on the Draft Guidance Document, Reporting Adverse Reactions to Marketed Health Products

The Draft Guidance Document for Industry: Reporting Adverse Reactions to Marketed Health Products has been posted on the Health Canada website for comment purposes.

This document was written at the level of the Health Products and Food Branch to provide guidance to industry on how to report adverse reactions involving market-authorized health products, including natural health products.

In facilitating reporting of adverse reactions by market authorization holders (i.e. licensees), Health Canada has harmonized to the greatest extent possible with the recommendations in the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) standards.

The Natural Health Products Directorate encourages its stakeholders to review this document and provide feedback. Anyone who wishes to provide comments on the draft guidance document is requested to do so by Dec 29, 2006. Please note that this document has only been posted for comment purposes, and is not yet being enforced.

Infants & Fluoride: New Warning from Dentists

EWG: In a little-noticed but dramatic turnaround, the nation's leading fluoride advocate, The American Dental Association (ADA), issued an alert on Nov 9th urging parents to avoid fluoridated water when reconstituting infant formula.

Dentists are worried that fluoride exposure at this age will permanently damage teeth, not protect them. A growing body of research also links fluoride to weakened bones, reduced thyroid activity, and possibly bone cancer in boys.

The advice, however, has gone largely unheeded. Nursery Water, the nation's leading fluoridated water for babies, still markets its product nationwide at Wal-Mart and other major retailers.

Help Environmental Working Group stop this unsafe practice. More at http://www.ewg.org/newsletter/20061129-fluoride/

Stop the Poisonings, Stop Paraquat

Pesticide Action Network Nov 2006 Action Alert

Paraquat, an extremely toxic herbicide, poisons tens of thousands of people every year. It is manufactured by the world's largest pesticide company, Swiss multinational Syngenta. There is no antidote for this dangerous pesticide, yet it is marketed in 100 countries and used in large quantities particularly by farmers in the Southern Hemisphere.

Swiss NGO Berne Declaration is holding a virtual People's Vote on Syngenta's practices and asking for your participation. PAN groups and many others are collaborating in the broad public campaign to bring public attention to Syngenta's inhuman business policies. We ask you to join in demanding that Syngenta take responsibility for the devastating health impacts of this highly hazardous pesticide and stop production now.

Take Action Now! Visit http://www.stop-paraquat.net to read the case against Syngenta and register your verdict of Guilty for Syngenta.

Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators 2006

The second annual report, Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators, prepared by Environment Canada, Statistics Canada and Health Canada, provides updates on three indicators: air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and freshwater quality. The indicators are intended as annual measuring sticks by which governments and the public can track trends in the three areas.

The report shows that between 1990 and 2004, one of the air pollutants that contribute to smog increased and greenhouse gas emissions rose. In addition, it reveals that water quality guidelines for aquatic life are being exceeded, at least occasionally, at a majority of selected monitoring sites across the country.

The Water We Drink

The David Suzuki Foundation recently issued a report called "The Water We Drink: An International Comparison of Water Quality Standards and Guidelines."

If you live in Canada and drink water, you need to read it.

David Boyd, the report's author, points out that between 1974 and 1996, there were more than 200 outbreaks of infectious disease caused by contaminated drinking water in Canada.

To protect the health of Canadians, all levels of government need to prevent pollutants from affecting the water we drink. Mr. Boyd found that Canada's water quality protection is sadly lacking, especially when compared to other industrialized nations such as the US, Australia, and Europe.

Case in point: Canada's water quality guidelines are actually voluntary. There are currently no legally enforced rules to protect our water. Mr. Boyd says the Federal government should step in and establish mandatory standards that meet or exceed those of other countries.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants: Most Defective Medical Device Ever Approved by the FDA

Public Citizen Nov 17 Press Release

Public Citizen has opposed the use of silicone gel breast implants since the fall of 1988, when we petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban them after receiving numerous documents from FDA scientists concerned about their safety.

In terms of adverse safety and health information known at the time of approval, such as high rates of rupture, the need for repeat surgery and clear evidence of lymph node infiltration and damage by leaked silicone, silicone gel breast implants are the most defective medical device ever approved by the FDA. The approval makes a mockery of the legal standard that requires reasonable assurance of safety.

It is a terrible reminder of the double standard for women versus men that the FDA has not approved silicone gel testicular implants because of the inadequacy of clinical trials on these devices. (Saline breast implants and testicular implants have been approved by the FDA.)
