Thank you to everyone who attended our "Endangered Natural Health Products? Part II" event on Monday. And thank you to our volunteers! With a turnout of about 300 people and a thought-provoking presentation by constitutional lawyer and Natural Health Product Regulations expert Shawn Buckley, we felt the evening was a success.

We taped the event and will be releasing it as a DVD for sale in the next month. We will also be offering it as a free gift option with a new HANS membership or a membership renewal.

Some of the highlights of Buckley's talk will also appear in the spring issue of Health Action magazine, so watch for it.

On an unrelated matter, one of our members would like us to spread the word that a student denturist in Vancouver is looking for someone who needs a full set of dentures. The process would take about three days of sitting, waiting, fitting, etc - lots of reading time! The good news is that the dentures, which usually cost around $1,500, would be free. Stop GM Sugar Beets this Valentine's - Take Instant Action to Keep Canadian Sugar GM-Free!

Canadian sugar company Lantic Inc. (Rogers Sugar and Lantic brands) needs to reject Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) sugar beet and stay GM-free. Lantic Inc. is the only sugar company in Canada that processes sugar beet (in Alberta) and is currently GM-free. The company is deciding now if it will accept GM sugar beets for the first time. This sugar beet is genetically modified to be resistant to Monsanto's herbicide Roundup and is currently applied to sugar beet used for processing into sugar - as opposed to red table beets. GM sugar beets are wind-pollinated, and there is a strong possibility that pollen from GM sugar beets could contaminate non-GM sugar beets as well as chard, and red and yellow beets (or "table beets").

Invitation to Canadian Organizations to Sign On to the "No to GMO Alfalfa" Campaign

The commercialization of genetically modified (GMO) alfalfa, planned by Monsanto and Forage Genetics International, would have a severe, negative impact on Canadian agriculture, markets, and our environment. A united effort by agriculture producer groups, consumer and environmental organizations, as well as concerned individuals, will prevent this from happening. A similar campaign stopped GMO wheat in 2004.

This is your invitation to join together to put the brakes on GMO alfalfa.

We invite all organizations, producer associations, companies and community groups to endorse the "No to GMO Alfalfa" campaign by signing on to the following statement (Your group's name will be used in a list of groups that state opposition to GMO Alfalfa):
  - We oppose the sale, trade and production of GMO alfalfa in Canada.
  - We ask the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to reassess its approval for environmental release of GMO Alfalfa.
  - We want the public to understand the hazards, costs and market losses that would result if GMO Alfalfa were released into our environment.

Action Alert: Stop EPA from Eliminating Access to Colloidal Silver

A coalition of environmental and activist groups have been inundating their members with emails and other messages to garner support for a misguided petition to have the EPA regulate nano-sized silver particles as pesticides. Regardless of what the intentions of any of the groups behind the petition may be, make no mistake that what is really behind this effort is the suppression of colloidal silver because of the threat it represents to billions of dollars in profits of the world pharmaceutical empire.

NOTE: The deadline for public comment to the EPA has been extended to March 20th. That is still only a month away. See the contact information at the end of this article and take action immediately if you want to make your opinion count.

The petition actually sprang from the International Center for Technology Assessment which enlisted its sister organization and several other environmental and activist groups to support their logical appearing yet misleading petition.
