Feb 2nd Event Update

Apologies for the delay in this issue of the HANS e-News. Whoever says that January is a quiet time of year hasn't been to our office lately!

A big thank you to everyone who's volunteered so far to help us with distributing posters and bag stuffers for our Feb 2nd event, "Endangered Natural Health Products? Part II" in Vancouver. We'll also need a few volunteers to help out the night of. Can you help us? If you can, hit reply to this e-News and send us an e-mail.

Just a reminder that the event is free for current HANS members, $5 for everyone else, and that there will be reserved seating for preregistered attendees. Preregister online at www.hans.org, or by calling us at 604-435-0512.

Reminder: Vote for HANS until Jan 31, 2009

In January, the Burnaby Now newspaper runs a contest to identify the best businesses in Burnaby. Due to last year's members' support, HANS won the award for Best Community Service Organization! We are so honoured and we thank our members and friends who took the time to vote for us on the ballots in the Burnaby Now.

This year we are asking that, if you're still big fans of HANS, you please fill out your ballot found in January Burnaby Now newspapers. Please cut out your ballot and vote for the Burnaby businesses you feel are the best. You can do this even if you live in Vancouver and other surrounding communities. There is a $2,000 shopping spree offered to the winner of the contest so fill in your ballot for your chance to win! You must vote for at least 15 different businesses for your ballot to count and the contest closes Monday, January 31, 2009 so make sure that you fill your ballot in right away and either drop it off at the Burnaby Now office or at the HANS office before then.

Project False Hope

For the almost nine million Canadians that browse health-related information on the Internet, a project of Competition Bureau Canada may be of interest. Project False Hope, an education and outreach initiative, was launched in March 2008 and is intended to reduce online cancer fraud.

We've all been exposed to them - Internet pop-ups selling everything from online gambling time to, yes, nutritional supplements. Then there are countless natural health product websites themselves, sometimes developed by unscrupulous sellers intending to make a profit at the expense of the truly ill.

An increasing body of research suggests that some vitamins, minerals, herbs and the like can be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Some supplements, but not all. Project False Hope is a tool to help teach people what to consider when researching nutrients for cancer. The website includes tips on how to avoid being scammed online. Its underlying message is "Research thoroughly before you buy." They also recommend consulting a health care practitioner who knows of your condition.
