Commonly sold air fresheners may contain dangerous chemicals, a recent CBC investigation found. The news outlet took a sampling of air fresheners on the Canadian market and tested them for two phthalates, DEP and DBP.
These two chemicals, which are linked to fertility and developmental problems in animal research have been banned in 12 European countries from children's toys, yet were found in nearly a third of air fresheners.
Air freshener makers of Canada's $200 million a year industry turned down in person interview requests by CBC, preferring to defend their products via email and pointing out that Health Canada approves these additives.
Currently air fresheners don't list ingredients. So, as consumers, what are our options if we want our homes to smell good, without the possible harmful toxins? Actually, there are many ways and the good news is that it is easy, fun and inexpensive.
Not only do natural air fresheners make the air seem fresher, they keep it that way--and less chemicals sprayed into the air means better air for you and your family!
Here are a few ideas on how to make your home smell wonderful, naturally.
To get you started, you will need:
The ratio I use for a spray is approximately 1 drop per 2 ml, so for a 50ml bottles, I'd use 25 to 30 drops of aromatherapy. Or you can do 1 drop per 3ml for a more diluted solution, but never use these on the skin directly. They're to be used only as air fresheners.
Always avoid breathing in air fresheners directly after they are sprayed, whether they are homemade or bought commercially.
For a diffuser, you can use up to 15 drops again depending how strong you like the aroma.
So experiment, have fun, and be creative! Some of my favorite recipes:
